In the year since then, we have travelled across the country recording interviews in 4 states and b-roll in 6 states, have photographed primary documents, have been working with composers in Spain and voice actors from around the US, and had even more adventures.

Today we wrapped studio recording of our narrator, Milton Siepman, at Windrush Productions near Chris’ home in Greeneville, Tennessee. Special thanks to Stephen Thompson for his engineering work for us.

We are in the home stretch. Just over a year from our starting point, we are now narrowing in on our final cut of the film and DVD production. We can’t wait to share the film with you soon!

We’ve been tantalizing you for a few weeks now about our soundtrack for War in Heaven, War on Earth. It is our pleasure to introduce you to an amazing music team from Madrid and Valencia, Spain. (Yes, this film is a truly international effort!) The composers include:

We’ve made a final selection for our narrator and will be in a studio recording that narration in the next two weeks. We’re also having primary source material recorded by voice artists. It’s pretty amazing to hear words written 150 years ago come alive with the right voice talent.

Other editing continues to go forward. Again, it’s so fulfilling to see footage that we shot last year coming together to tell the stories of these remarkable times and remarkable people.

We continue to enjoy the music our composers are producing and look forward to introducing them very soon.

Are you a digital illustrator, or do you know someone who is? We are looking for an illustrator for our film.

The art style needs to be similar to the Harper’s Weekly etchings in our trailer as seen above (the new art will be used in the same way, portraying specific scenes), although it can lean more towards sketches/movie concept art. We will need 20-25 finished pieces, and are open to working with multiple artists. This is an open public call, so if you are interested, send us links to samples of your work.

This week we’ve been working on the musical score with our composing team in Spain. They are doing an amazing job, and even though we are still early in the process, their work is incredibly moving and beautiful.

They just sent me an incomplete draft for the music of a crucial scene, where Abraham Lincoln’s son Willie dies. I’ve had it looping for the last 20 minutes, and just can’t believe how great it is.

We’ll be posting some samples soon and introducing the team, but for now, I just had to express how excited I am.

First, you can see the graphic mockup of the DVD cover. I hope it makes you eager to watch the movie! Please let us know what you think of it — we appreciate your thoughts and comments.

Loren and I got together this month to work hard on the script. A portion of the film-in-progress focusing on 1862 will be seen next month at a special meeting arranged by one of our distributors.

Next week part of the narration will be recorded, with the rest to follow. Voice actors, who will share parts of letters, articles, and diaries (primary sources, to you historians, including a few seen or heard nowhere else to our knowledge) are beginning to come on board as well.

We’re working with a great music team as we get into the score for the film and hope to make that information public soon.

Other parts of post production are going well as the various elements come together.

We’ll do our best to give a lot more updates in February, March, and April as everything snowballs to the final cut!

What then? Right after a short break for the holidays (a chance to come back with fresh eyes, so to speak), we’ll revise and edit the script as needed. Then a professional voice-over artist will record the narration. Other voice-overs will be recorded; quotes, for example, from people like Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Beecher Stowe, or J. N. Loughborough. We’ll assemble and integrate all the footage and pictures. A composer will add music as we go along. January and February will be VERY busy with postproduction activities! Stay tuned. . . .

The production team has been arranging for one last Civil War reenactment shoot and a few more interviews; we’ve begun the editing process with the footage we have; we’re working on the script with the background of many hours of research and interviews; and we’re making arrangements for the various aspects of post-production which will swing into motion very soon.

We’re also making a final push to complete our post-production budget . . . not simply a bare bones budget, but around just $15,000 left to really finish strong, with a few “extras” to tell the story to more people (for example, we want to be able to include translation and subtitles in Spanish, Portugese, and French). Thanks for sharing our excitement in this journey, even during the quietly productive months. We’ll have a few new pieces of footage to show you in October, then keep you up to date as post-production progresses through the end of the year. We spent the last weekend in New Market, TN, at the Battle of Mossy Creek Civil War Re-enactment. We had a great time despite the 100+ degree weather, and are very excited about some of the footage we have been able to capture for the film. To share some of our excitement, we have prepared a short video reel that highlights some of the work we have been doing.

For this shoot, we added a Canon EF 100-400mm lens to our arsenal. I would guess 75% of this video is shot with that lens, and we couldn’t be happier. It allowed us to get right up on the action while maintaining a safe and respectful distance from the re-enactors.

Our standard camera kit includes two Canon t2i cameras, two stock Canon 18-55mm lenses, and two Canon 55-250mm lenses. All of our cameras and cards are running the latest version of Magic Lantern, which is proving invaluable on this project. And all editing and post work is done in Final Cut Pro, Motion, and After Effects.

In addition to filming at historic locations and historical re-enactments, we have also been hard at work arranging and recording interviews that will help to tell the story of the birth of the Seventh-day Adventist Church during the Civil War.
